July 15, 2016, marks a decisive moment of resistance when the Turkish nation stood united for democracy, homeland, and its national will. The coup attempt by the terrorist organization FETÖ/PDY was thwarted by the determination of the Turkish people under the leadership of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Türkiye.
Turks living abroad contributed to this historic trial. From the first minute of that dark night, citizens of Turkish origin gathered in front of diplomatic missions worldwide, particularly in Europe, waving flags, holding a democracy vigil, and proclaiming to humanity: “The sovereignty of the people is inviolable!”
Friendly nations showed solidarity by standing with Turkish institutions. This underscores that July 15 is not only about Türkiye but also about all peoples threatened by oppression.
As the diaspora, we keep the memory alive. Through worldwide events, especially in Europe and Germany, we honor the 251 victims of the foiled coup attempt and pay tribute to the wounded. July 15 embodies Türkiye’sdemocratic resistance against coup-plotting terrorism.
July 15 symbolizes not only Türkiye’s commitment to democracy and the rule of law but also the global fight against terror. Since FETÖ clearly poses a global threat, we expect a more sincere stance from our Western partners against this terrorist organization.
True allies are defined not by neutrality toward coups and terror but by clear solidarity. Tolerating FETÖ structures and refusing judicial accountability undermines the credibility of nations that claim to uphold democracy and human rights. The international community must end double standards in counterterrorism and stand more firmly with the Republic of Türkiye on this issue.
July 15 teaches us that our true strength lies in unity, today and always. As part of the Turkish diaspora, we preserve the valuable cultural ties with our homeland. Honoring the fallen remains our duty. In the spirit of July 15, we stand with all oppressed peoples worldwide, especially the innocent civilians in Gaza. We advocate for human dignity, freedom, and justice, hoping for a more peaceful world order.
One thing is certain: European peace and prosperity can only be strengthened through the constructive contribution of a stable, democratic Republic of Türkiye. On this ninth anniversary, we honor the memory of the fallen and pay our deepest respects to the survivors. May the spirit of unity from July 15 guide us toward a reconciled future.
